Loose Backing Flanges
Backing Flange / FBE Coated Steel / EN1092 / PN16
FBE coated steel loose backing flange dimensions are machined in accordance with BSEN 1092-1 to match an ISO 9624 Standard PE flange adaptor. The ring is drilled in accordance with BSEN 1092-1 PN16. Other drillings are available on request.
Steel flanges are manufactured from Grade 250 Mild steel, which is grit blasted to SA2.5 white metal, with a surface profile > 75um then heated and coated with a high-quality Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE).
Coatings are applied and tested in accordance with the UK Water Industry Standard WIS 4-52-01 coatings suitable for buried applications.
Note: FBE is not recommended for prolonged direct UV exposure, due to the chalking effect occurring on the surface of epoxies when exposed to UV. For such applications consider using a 316 Stainless Steel loose backing ring.
TBC - Dimension to be supplied by the purchaser depending on the design Maximum Operating Pressure (MOP). |

Backing Flange / Stainless Steel / EN1092 / PN16
Stainless Steel loose backing flanges are machined in accordance with BSEN 1092-1 to dimensionally match an ISO 9624 PE flange adaptor. The ring is drilled in accordance with BSEN 1092-1 PN16. Other drillings are available on request.
Flanges can be manufactured from various grades of Stainless steel depending on the application and the required time to first maintenance, for a 100-year design life without maintenance, we recommend the following:
- Exposed in a non-marine environment, inside a building such as mechanical services: Grade 304 Stainless steel such as BSEN 10088-2 Grade 1.4301 or 1.4307
- Buried in the ground or exposed within coastal environments: Grade 316L Stainless steel such as BSEN 10088-2 Grade 1.4401 or 1.4404
- Permenantly immersed in seawater, installed in splash zones, under marine structures or buried in the seabed (flanged joints on a submarine pipeline): Duplex Stainless Steel (improved resistance to crevice corrosion) such as BSEN 10088-2 Grade 1.4462 for plate rings or BSEN 10222-5 Grade 1.4462 for forged rings.
Further information on marine grade stainless steels selections can be found at International Stainless Steel Forum:
Note: when connecting Stainless steel flanges or fasteners to a Ductile Iron fitting there is potential for galvanic or dissimilar metal corrosion between the stainless steel and Cast Iron. Insulation of stainless steel fasteners in contact with cast iron such as using Acetyl or POM washers should be considered.
No Liability: The recommendations given above are generic, designers must consider the actual environmental considerations in each application and make an informed material choice.
TBC - Dimension to be supplied by the purchaser depending on the design Maximum Operating Pressure (MOP). |
